Oman Barista Competition

Oman Barista Competition is the long running premiere coffee competition platform in the Sultanate of Oman. Returning for its 8th Edition in 2020, the Oman Barista Competition vows to captivate the audience by showcasing the talent of some of the Sultanate's finest Baristas, and in turn promote the excellence in coffee and the advancing Barista profession.

The Oman Barista Competition is a test of the technical skills, knowledge and celerity of the Baristas.

The Oman Barista Competition 2020 is open for professionals from the hospitality industry; such as hotels, resorts, restaurants and cafes from all over Oman. To excel at the competition, each barista must prepare one cup of the perfect espresso, one decorated cappuccino and one signature espresso-based drink, all within the challenging time-frame of 15 minutes. As they prepare their drinks, the participants must engage the audience and the judges with their skills and explain their actions and selections, while expertly operating the espresso machine.

COMPETITION DETAILS

Each participant must prepare and present the following:

  1. A cup of single espresso
  2. A cup of decorated cappuccino
  3. A signature drink of the contestant's choice

Each participant must prepare the above mentioned drinks in a time-frame of 15 minutes.


SINGLE ESPRESSO
  1. An espresso is a one ounce (25ml) drink, including crema. (+/- 5ml is allowed)
  2. Each single Espresso should be produced with an appropriate and consistent amount of ground coffee.
  3. Extraction time must be between 20 and 30 seconds.
  4. Espressos must be served in the provided 60ml illy espresso cup.
  5. Espresso should be served to the judges immediately after preparation and should be properly presented in a tray with a spoon, napkin, sugar and water (all presentation items will be made available to the participants)

CAPPUCCINO
  1. Cappuccino is a beverage of ratios - a harmonious balance of one single shot of espresso, and steamed and frothed milk.
  2. The Cappuccino must be served in the provided 180ml illy cappuccino cup.
  3. The Cappuccino can be decorated with only foamed milk, chocolate powder or syrup topping (chocolate powder and syrups will be made available to all participants)

SIGNATURE DRINK
  1. A signature beverage is a freestyle Espresso-based beverage exclusively created by the participant for this competition.
  2. A distinct taste of Espresso must be present in the Signature Drink.
  3. The participants can use the provided Toschi flavored syrups.
  4. The participants are allowed to bring additional ingredients or utensils for their signature beverage.
  5. The signature beverage will be presented in a 150ml cold Illy glass.
  6. The beverage must be decorated only with edible items (Sticks, stirrers, etc., are not allowed)
  7. The participants must submit the cocktail to the jury with a written presentation and then explain name of composition of their drinks.
  1. It is mandatory for every participant to prepare all three (3) drinks.
  2. All drinks must be prepared using illy coffee only.
  3. Each recipe should not exceed four ingredients. Coffee, milk, sugar and the likes will be deemed as an ingredient.
  4. Each participant will be allocated 15 minutes for the live preparation of all three (3) drinks.
  5. Every participant should wear their own uniform.
  6. The Competition stand will be equipped with the following
    • Astoria-Calypso Traditional Espresso Coffee Machine - 2 Group
    • Astoria Super Jolly manual coffee grinder with coffee doser
    • illy Coffee Beans (Normal Roast)
    • Ice Cubes
    • Al Rawabi Full-Fat Milk
    • Toschi Syrups
    • Other bar utensils (Blender, Tamper, Milk Pitcher, Bar Brush, Shaker, Ice Scoop, Cocoa Duster, Cream Whipper, etc.)
  7. All drinks should be served to the judges at the presentation table.
  8. The jury will be composed of local and international coffee experts.
  9. The deadline for the submission of registration forms is September 10, 2020.
  10. Recipe for Signature drinks must be submitted along with the registration forms.
